Pre-sessional Course Boarding Activity Leader

The Pre-Sessional course is the first introduction to the school for students who are judged, through the admission process, to require additional support in one or more academic areas prior to the start of their taught courses, or who would benefit from additional English language tuition and/or early familiarisation and confidence in learning in the UK.

By the nature of the role, the following list is not exhaustive, but is a guideline as to the principal requirements and expectations associated with it.

Responsibilities

Student welfare, pastoral care and safeguarding
  • To prioritise the safeguarding, welfare and health & safety of students above all other duties and to be familiar with statutory safeguarding and child protection legislation as well as relevant College policies.
  • To take responsibility for safeguarding and reporting any concerns regarding students to the pastoral team.
  • Safeguarding responsibilities include:
  • Demonstrating a commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students in line with College policies and procedure.
  • Responding appropriately to incidents and concerns regarding student welfare in a sensitive, empathetic, and supportive manner, reporting any incidents and concerns to the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator.
  • Liaising regularly with the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator and with other Activity Leaders.
  • To encourage the highest standards of student behaviour and where student behaviour is unacceptable, to intervene appropriately and inform the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator.
  • To comply with all established health and safety procedures.

    Boarding

  • Contribute proactively to the creation of a warm and welcoming boarding environment, working consciously to build relationships with the students.

  • Supervise all daily routines, including reveille and bed-times, afternoon breaks, breakfast and evening meals, and homework supervision on a rota basis.
  • Monitor the whereabouts of students through rollcalls at assembly, lunchtime and in the evenings, ensuring that curfews are kept and bed-times respected.
  • Support the students in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene, both personal and in their accommodation.

     Activities, Leisure & down time

  • Working as a team with the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator and the other Boarding & Activity Leaders, plan, prepare, deliver and lead a programme of enriching and meaningful activities and trips.
  • Encourage full and enthusiastic engagement by students in the scheduled programme.
  • To play an active role in the induction process, assisting with orientation around the site, checking into rooms and contributing to all activities as directed by the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator.
  • Complete attendance records of students as required by the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator, and report on attendance and student engagement and behaviour.
  • Contribute to the production of an end-of-course report on each student reflecting on their academic progress and personal development.
  • Attend regular staff meetings, as prescribed by the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator.
  • Attend and contribute to assemblies.
  • Other duties, as deemed appropriate by the Boarding, Pastoral & Extra-Curricular Coordinator.

RemunerationPaid weekly, one week in arrears. £600 per week plus any accrued holiday to be paid at the end of contract*

About You

Qualifications and experience

  • Suitable leisure qualification e.g., current Lifeguard Certificate, First Aid, Sports Leader, Coaching qualifications (desirable).
  • Experience of working with teenagers in a residential environment (desirable).
  • Enthusiasm, energy, and motivational & communication skills.
  • Boarding management/leadership experience.
